Booking Window Alert: Summer 2027 Campsites Open This Winter
Edited by Juniper Ashby
Public Lands & Campgrounds · Updated November 1, 2026
At campgrounds with a rolling six-month window, a June 1, 2027 arrival opens on December 1, 2026, and each day after that adds one more summer date. Some popular parks release sites on different schedules, and state park systems use different windows. Here's how to work out your date and what to check before booking day.

Why it matters
- ✓Summer weekends at popular campgrounds can fill the day they open, so booking day is often months before the trip.
- ✓Holiday weekends shift the math: a Fourth of July weekend arrival in 2027 opens in early January.
- ✓Yosemite, Acadia, Shenandoah and most state systems don't follow the standard rolling pattern, so the general rule won't give you the right date there.
If you want a campsite for summer 2027, your booking day is probably this winter. Start by confirming your campground's booking window on its official page, then count back from your arrival date.
How the six-month rolling window works
Many federal campgrounds on Recreation.gov let you book up to six months ahead, one day at a time. The Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests give the clearest example: if you book on January 1, you can reserve any available date out to July 1. On January 2, the window reaches July 2. Yellowstone's camping page puts it the same way: you can book a site exactly six months before the date of your stay.
So the rule of thumb is the same day of the month, six months earlier. Recreation.gov's published policies don't set one release time for every campground, so check the campground's listing for the time and time zone. Where parks do publish a time, it's usually early: Acadia lists 10 a.m. Eastern, and Yosemite lists 7 a.m. Pacific.
Worked examples for summer 2027
Under a standard six-month rolling window:
| If you book on... | ...you can reserve arrivals through | |---|---| | December 1, 2026 | June 1, 2027 | | December 15, 2026 | June 15, 2027 | | January 2, 2027 | July 2, 2027 (the Friday before the Fourth of July) | | January 15, 2027 | July 15, 2027 | | February 1, 2027 | August 1, 2027 | | February 15, 2027 | August 15, 2027 |
Two holiday weekends sit just outside this winter stretch:
- Memorial Day weekend 2027: Memorial Day falls on May 31. A Friday, May 28 arrival opens on November 28, 2026, so it's coming up before December.
- Labor Day weekend 2027: Labor Day is September 6. A Friday, September 3 arrival opens on March 3, 2027, just after this window.
For arrivals on the 29th, 30th or 31st, check how the campground's calendar handles months with fewer days rather than assuming.
Longer stays and the 18-day rule
Your booking date is set by your first night, but a multi-night stay can run past the edge of the window. Recreation.gov's policies say that if a reservation includes dates beyond the maximum booking window, you can't change it until 18 days after you booked. Be sure of your dates before you book a stay like that.
Parks with their own schedules
Yosemite National Park releases its Valley, Wawona and Hodgdon Meadow campgrounds in monthly blocks on the 15th at 7 a.m. Pacific:
- December 15 opens arrivals from April 15 through May 14.
- January 15 opens arrivals from May 15 through June 14.
- February 15 opens arrivals from June 15 through July 14.
The park says these releases sell out within minutes. Half of Tuolumne Meadows opens two months ahead on the 15th, several other campgrounds open two weeks ahead, and Camp 4 opens one week ahead.
Acadia National Park releases 90 percent of sites at Blackwoods, Seawall and Schoodic Woods on the first of each month at 10 a.m. Eastern, starting December 1. The park's own example notes that a May 20 arrival can be booked in the December 1 release. That makes the December, January and February releases the ones to watch for late spring and summer trips. Check Acadia's camping page for which arrival dates each release covers. The other 10 percent of sites open 14 days before arrival on a rolling basis.
Shenandoah National Park releases half of its reservable sites six months ahead, a quarter two weeks ahead and the rest four days ahead. The park says reservations for early 2027 are on hold while campground operations move to a new concessioner. It expects to open reservations in early January and to announce details, including rates, in mid-December. If Shenandoah is on your list, check its reservations page in December.
State parks: different windows
State park systems book through their own websites, on their own schedules:
- California State Parks: up to six months ahead, so the winter math above roughly applies. Check ReserveCalifornia for the exact release time.
- Texas State Parks: most stays can be booked up to five months ahead, and the window opens at 8 a.m. Booking in December through February reaches into May, June and July arrivals.
- Washington State Parks: up to nine months before the first night of your trip, so much of summer 2027 is already open now. If you're planning a Washington trip, check availability this month.
What to do now
- Pick two or three campgrounds and open each one's official page to confirm its window, release time and time zone.
- Count back from your arrival date and add the booking date and time to your calendar, converted to your own time zone.
- Prepare your account on Recreation.gov or the state system ahead of time, and choose a few acceptable sites.
- Have a backup plan. Midweek arrivals, nearby national forest campgrounds and cancellations all give you more chances.
