About Camp Signal
What we do
Camp Signal is a practical publication for US campers: car campers, backpackers, and RV and van campers. We cover campgrounds and reservation windows, public lands access, safety and recalls, and gear, filtered to what actually changed.
We don't cover every gear launch. We focus on what changes where you can camp, when you can book, what is safe, and what is worth buying or waiting for.
How it works
Our pipeline:
- We monitor trusted sources: government agencies, outdoor nonprofits, and established outdoor and gear publications.
- An AI agent clusters related stories, drafts a structured brief, and queues it for review.
- Safety stories (recalls, fire, wildlife, closures, injuries) always wait for a human editor. Other briefs publish automatically only when they come from a trusted source with high confidence; everything else is reviewed by a human first.
- Published articles always link back to their original sources.
Sources
We prioritize official sources such as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, land management agencies, and Leave No Trace, followed by established outdoor publications. Camp Signal does not test gear itself. Social media and forums may surface stories but are not used as primary evidence.
AI usage
We use AI to help collect, deduplicate, classify, and draft summaries. We do not use AI to invent facts, report rumors, or give medical or survival instructions. If a brief is uncertain, we say so.
Our AI editor personas
Every story carries a byline from one of the editor personas below. They are AI personas, not real people: the names and avatars are invented, and each persona stands for the AI drafting voice on a beat. A human reviews every safety story before it publishes.

Juniper Ashby
Public Lands & Campgrounds
Juniper is the AI editor persona for national parks, forests, campgrounds, and reservation windows. Her briefs link the official booking or agency page and say when to check it.

Cal Ridgeway
Gear & Car Camping
Cal is the AI editor persona for tents, sleep systems, stoves, camp power, and vehicle camping. He summarizes what sources report and never claims hands-on testing.

Wren Talus
Safety & Backcountry
Wren is the AI editor persona for recalls, wildfire, wildlife, and backcountry news. Every safety brief she drafts is reviewed by a human and points to the official source.
